School visits in Lejre Land of Legends

TRAVEL BACK IN TIME TO
A LAND YOU MUST EXPLORE

Lejre Land of Legends offers a learning landscape with high ceilings. Here you and your pupils/children can get the past right under the skin. As an educational activity center, Lejre Land of Legends makes abstract knowledge concrete. It is inspired by the old Chinese proverb “I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand”.

Learning by doing is the keynote when students work in communities of practice. “Learning is doing and doing is learning” is supported with methods such as historical workshop work, apprenticeship, the drama method “teacher in role”, embodied learning and dialogue-based teaching. These are the basic elements of our pedagogical, community-strengthening work, where hands explore what this is all about. All lessons promote knowledge, understanding and application, and there are different forms of knowledge at play. The activities are meaningful, comprehensible and manageable.

Lejre Land of Legends’ learning offerings encourage individual subjects and interdisciplinary work in school in the subjects of history, Danish, culinary arts, nature/technology, social studies, visual arts, crafts and design, biology, geography and Christian studies. The programs support the Common Goals and the subjects’ subject objectives according to the Danish National Education Act and help develop students’ competencies and skills in various subjects.

Teaching and school programs can also be booked during periods when Lejre Land of Legends is not open for day visitors.

The price for admission is DKK 60 per child/teacher/educator.

Learning with all the senses

These are the basic elements of our pedagogical, community-strengthening work, where hands explore what this is all about. All lessons promote knowledge, understanding and application, and there are different forms of knowledge at play. Activities are meaningful, comprehensible and manageable.

Camp schools

Camp school in the Viking area

Your class will embark on a time travel to the early Viking Age, where you as foster sons and daughters will be apprenticed to the king’s shepherds who look after the area around Kongehallen, or as traveling Vikings in the tent area at Kongehallen. We will give you an insight into the living conditions of our ancestors and give an impression of a Viking Age in full bloom with testimonies from near and far of the known world. You will participate in food preparation, crafts, warrior training and learn about faith and power. Some students will make themselves useful in the kitchen area with cooking, crafts, and wool and yarn crafts, while others are diligent with wood crafts or blacksmithing, crafts and other crafts.

There is room for 2 classes at a time. If you’re lucky, there will be another school class in the Viking area at the same time. Then there is the possibility of joint activities such as warrior training, storytelling or haggling. Maybe you’ll treat each other to a meal. Lejre Land of Legends is open to other guests and they will be curious about what you are doing. This gives you a great opportunity to share the knowledge and experience you’ve gained with others.

Your stay lasts from 1 day to 4 days. You have the option to book two or three facilitators for your program.

Camp school

A school camp at the Viking site helps students understand chronology, supports students’ historical awareness and brings different source material (reconstructions, stories and eyewitness accounts from the instructors’ characters) into play. Source-critical analysis is supported and leaves room for students’ own interpretations and reflection on interaction with their own life world.

The course supports food awareness and cooking techniques and provides opportunities to interpret meals with an understanding of values, culture and living conditions.

Students gain knowledge of non-Christian religions and beliefs. They can relate to ethical issues and compare and contrast their experiences with Christianity, other religions and beliefs.

Students can use tools and instruments in relation to the form and function of the product.

On your own

Learning on your own in Lejre Land of Legends

You come to a learning space with high ceilings. In Lejre Land of Legends you have 43 hectares of natural landscape to explore. If your visit is to be more than just an excursion, you need to have a meaning and an intention for your visit. It’s a very special space that not all students know.

We embrace the “open school” and collaboration on student learning, and have therefore prepared a series of teaching courses as inspiration for those who want to use Lejre Land of Legends as a place for your teaching – an alternative learning space, an extra classroom. The courses are examples of how teaching out here can be framed and qualified.

The courses are designed to fit into your everyday life. They are therefore based on the Common Goals (FM). Potential skill and knowledge objectives are stated in each course, and we have also made suggestions for learning objectives. We also suggest what impact the learning space can have on the students’ all-round development.

The courses have content and activities for before, during and after the visit.

On your own

The course supports students’ competence to investigate, model, put into perspective and communicate their findings. The course leaves room for students’ own interpretations and reflection on interaction with their own life world.
