The history of Denmark – The oldest times

On this tour, the Sagnland guide takes you on a journey through the earliest times of Danish history from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. The tour is about how life developed from 14,000 years before to 200 years after our era.

You can sit on beds, hold things in your hands and touch everything on the tour to the prehistoric environments with houses and huts. They are hidden between small hilltops that are characteristic of the Ice Age landscape in which Lejre Land of Legends is located.

The guide will meet you inside Lejre Land of Legends at the Welcome Center. There are toilets and luggage lockers if you need them. The guide will introduce you to the background and history of Lejre Land of Legends before you set off on the tour.
The tour ends at the Hvidesøhus café and Båldalen in the middle of Lejre Land of Legends.

The King’s Hall

On a beautiful hill in Lejre Land of Legends, we have recreated the largest royal hall known from the Viking Age in Denmark. The remains of the original building were excavated less than three kilometers from Lejre Land of Legends, in a field in the village of Gl. Lejre.

At just over 60 meters from gable to gable, the hall was about as long as a football pitch is wide, and with its rows of thick posts, the construction could support a building with a ceiling height of over 10 meters. At over 600m2, the Great King’s Hall is a unique testament to the culmination of Nordic architecture and craftsmanship in the Viking Age.

Together we explore the King’s Hall and get close to the elite who stayed in the hall with the King in the 700s.
