Research center and excursion destination

Lejre Land of Legends was founded in 1964 to create new knowledge about the past through experimentation.

At the same time, Lejre Land of Legends is an atmospheric and exciting excursion destination for the whole family. Here you’ll find houses and environments from the Stone Age, Iron Age, Viking Age and the 1800s, as well as working workshops and old livestock breeds. All this in 43 hectares of unique nature with hills, forests, lakes and meadows.

The purpose of Sagnlandet

The meeting between research and the public is central to the work of Lejre Land of Legends and is enshrined in Article 2 of the statutes:

The purpose of Lejre Land of Legends is to operate a research center for conducting ethnological, historical and archaeological experiments, carrying out related research tasks and to disseminate the results through scientific channels and through active communication and teaching.

Qualified fulfillment of the purpose is ensured through Lejre Land of Legends’ management and employment of professionally trained staff in academic, technical and craft subjects such as archaeology, history, communication, didactics, pedagogy, landscaping, textile crafts, pottery, forging and film/photo. Hiring a broadly composed instructor corps of students and pupils within the same disciplines ensures a good and inspiring contact with the teaching and education sector and the thoughts and ideas that are stirring there.

The director reports to a competent board of researchers, politicians and business people.

To maintain focus in our daily work, we have translated Lejre Land of Legends’ mission statement into more inspiring definitions and formulations expressed in our mission, vision and core values.

H.M. Queen Margrethe Patron

In 2003, Her Majesty the Queen took on the role of patron in recognition of Lejre Land of Legends’ many years of commitment to experimental archaeological research, education and public awareness.

The Land of Legends Concept

Cultural and natural experiences are the backbone of Lejre Land of Legends’ concept and activities. A visit to Lejre Land of Legends is a sensory experience where the eyes, ears, nose, mouth, hands and feet are all taken care of. Whether you choose a self-guided hike through Lejre Land of Legends’ permanently reconstructed environments from the Stone Age, Iron Age, Viking Age and the 1800s, attend one of the seasonal program’s many events, participate in an educational offer or invest in a tailor-made experience tour for your workplace – challenges for both hand and head are a key element.

To ensure a great audience experience, we emphasize:

  • Dialogue – creating the individual experience. Conversation between employee and visitor invites the illumination of new topics and approaches arising from the current communication situation.
  • Active participation – ensuring the personal experience. Active participation involves the guest in the unfolding of the past way of life. What was easy, difficult, good and/or hard? Concrete experience is an eye-opener for today’s capabilities and limitations. But a fun and social first-hand experience can also be what sparks a lasting curiosity for knowledge about the past and history.
  • Bringing it to life – stimulating the visitor’s imagination and imagination.

Bringing it to life allows for the communication of the strengths, weaknesses and development of the underlying research and gives the viewer the opportunity to take an independent, critical stance on today’s view of yesterday’s world.

The activating form of communication also caters for the academically weak, who in Lejre Land of Legends get a successful experience of unfolding their creative abilities, dexterity and physical skills.

This is the Living Past in Lejre Land of Legends.
