MISSION
The mission of Lejre Land of Legends is to create and communicate knowledge and wonder about past ways of life through experimental archaeological research, animation and education based on active participation. Active participation is a cornerstone of Land of Legends’ work and is reflected in our mission. It is inspired by an old Chinese proverb:
I hear and I forget.
I see and I remember.
I try and I understand.
A PAST
IN A PRESENT
WITH A FUTURE
VISION
Lejre Land of Legends strives to show that historical insight can always put today’s issues into perspective, and that our choices today have consequences for tomorrow.
Children and young people are the cultural and natural stewards of tomorrow. Therefore, our most important task is to give children and young people insight into the connections between technological innovation, societal changes and changes in human and natural views over the millennia. Our starting point is that:
ACTION without ATTITUDE signals indifference, just as
ATTITUDE without INSIGHT signals PREJUDICE.
Therefore, we see historical insight as a strong starting point for children and young people to shape the society and values of the future. That’s why Sagnlandet’s vision is: ‘A past in a present with a future
DIVERSITY
UNDERSTANDING
RESPONSIBILITY
BASIS OF VALUES
Lejre Land of Legends conveys history for children and adults in a time of globalization. Every day, society is becoming increasingly complex and multicultural. In order to engage in respectful dialog in such a society, we consider insight into historical contexts – especially for children and young people – as part of an educational project.
It shows that all people are rooted in a specific culture they are surrounded by. We are all history makers and history creators. Therefore, we also have a responsibility for what the future should look like. Therefore, Lejre Land of Legends bases its activities on a set of values based on the following keywords:
DIVERSITY – in people’s culture, self-understanding and understanding of the world, illuminated in a historical perspective.
UNDERSTANDING – of the connections between cultural background and views on nature and resource utilization.
RESPONSIBILITY – for the sustainable management of cultural and natural heritage.
