An area with an amazing history
Historically, the Lejre area is not just any spot in the Danish landscape. Ancient legends about Lejre tell tales of human sacrifice, monsters and monarchs. The stories are many, and even archaeologists have to agree with the legends. Lejre is something special. Lejre is the place that some of Denmark’s first Viking kings called home.
Just three kilometers from the Land of Legends, there was a large royal hall almost 1500 years ago. Denmark’s largest. About as long as a football pitch is wide and with posts so big and thick that they could support a two-storey building. Today, not much remains of the hall, but archaeologists have made a small mound in the landscape so you can see where it was. Take a walk past and feel the grandeur of the ancient kings. Soon you will also be able to experience a recreation of the royal hall in Lejre Land of Legends.
Just 200 meters from the old hall is Lejre Museum, a small subdivision of Roskilde Museum. On the other side of the museum you can see the stones that remain of the original ship’s settlement and burial ground, now rebuilt in Lejre Land of Legends.

A trip to Roskilde
If you can’t get enough of history, take a trip to Roskilde. See the cathedral or go down to the harbor where the Viking Ship Museum works with the boats of the past.
Beautiful hikes
