Very few people would want to miss out on cosiness and festivities when the winter weather sets in and darkness falls early. This is true today, it was true in the 19th century – from which many of today’s Christmas traditions originate – and it was true in the Viking Age, when midwinter offered many a celebration.
How the festive season was celebrated by the Vikings of old and the common folk of the Landbo era, and how Christmas has evolved into what we know today, are just some of the things you can experience when Sagnlandet Lejre celebrates ‘Christmas Through the Ages’, highlighting both Christmas customs from your great-great-grandfather’s childhood and the midwinter celebrations of the Viking-era kings.
On 28 and 29 November, and on 5, 6, 12 and 13 December, you can experience Christmas as it was celebrated in the past. Bring the children along and experience the scent of beeswax, the sound of tin being poured into moulds, and the joy of creating something with your hands. Christmas at Sagnlandet Lejre is filled with traditional crafts and stories that spark curiosity and bring warmth amidst the winter chill.
