Jutta Eberhards is Narrator of the Month August 2020

Jutta is almost always to be found out on Ravnebjerg. It’s been many years since Jutta Eberhards joined Lejre Land of Legends. For Jutta, it’s not just about telling stories:

–“That joy of being able to tell a story and open up some times through the spoken word is one of the tools we work with in Lejre Land of Legends,” says Jutta Eberhards.

Every month, a “Storyteller of the Month” is appointed by Fortællere i Danmark, an association of oral storytellers and storytelling associations in Denmark.

-“Ithink it’s crazy to be told that I’m the storyteller of the month. It’s incomprehensible, also because I feel such humility in telling stories. The fact that there is someone in the world who thinks you should be nominated is a great thing,” continues Jutta Eberhard.

-“WhenI workwith stories, it’s important for me to meet and feel the essence of the story.

This requires an animistic approach and mindset. A creature has and is a soul, and such a soul is hidden in all the stories that I want to tell.

Meeting the essence of the story requires me to familiarize myself with the story, to be curious about it, investigative and playful. I read it, listen to it several times, taste the words, listen to it in my head, feel it. The story has an entrance and an exit and through that I find my approach. It has a keynote and a rhythm and shows me what makes an impression and how to express it.

Once I have grasped the essence of the story, the essentials emerge. At that moment, I know how I want to tell the story. In the process of appropriating the story, I make it my own. It is reflected in me, in the material I want to convey and in the tension and atmosphere that arises with the listeners!

I choose to take on the role of host for my story and my listeners. I set a framework where we can gather together to share the common third,” she explains to Fortællere i Danmark.

It is precisely being selected among colleagues and other storytellers that makes Jutta most proud – but also a little touched:

-“Iwas touched, and I was also grateful. It’s a bit incomprehensible that I feel such humility about telling stories. That someone in the big world thinks that you should be honored among colleagues is a great thing.
