What is a family of the past?
Prehistoric families in Lejre Land of Legends are ordinary families who want to spend part of their vacation in a reconstructed prehistoric environment. This could be in the Iron Age village, at the Viking marketplace or in the 19th century environment of Krikkebjerghuse.
The families of the past are an important part of the interpretation in Lejre Land of Legends. They help bring the areas to life as part of Lejre Land of Legends’ cultural history experiments and share their own experiences with the public.
You don’t have to be a traditional nuclear family to become a family of the past. Friends, neighbors, grandparents and extra children can easily be part of your past family.
A stay as a past family is an all-round, full-body experience and an unforgettable week where you as participants learn a lot about the past, old chores and crafts – and about your own skills and limits.
It’s a very special journey of discovery that more than 1000 families have embarked on since Lejre Land of Legends first hosted families from the past back in 1974.

Then we recommend a different kind of time travel – all the way back to the Iron Age.
As a family from the Iron Age, you travel 2000 years back in time and move into one of Lejre Land of Legends’ four reconstructed longhouses in the Iron Age village of Lethra for a week.
Here you’ll learn about the life of the Iron Age people, lots of fun and practical tasks and learn about Iron Age methods and materials. You’ll gather firewood and bake bread, pick herbs and cook soup, try your hand at making your own clay pots or forge in the Iron Age way.

Family vacation in the past
in the Viking Age:
Are you and your children ready to break old habits and go offline and experience something special this summer?
As an ancient family in the Viking area, you’ll get to live like Vikings in the Marketplace at Lejre Land of Legends’ huge King’s Hall.
A family holiday in the Viking Age is 5 days filled with stories, fun and practical tasks, new knowledge and cozy togetherness.
During your vacation in the past, you’ll have the opportunity to try your hand at Viking sports and weaponry and make small and large crafts in wool, wood, leather and metal.
You’ll prepare your food in Viking style on a campfire. It’s a holiday that offers shared experiences, new challenges and lots of togetherness.

Family stays in the past
in the 1800s:
Are you and your children ready to break old habits and go offline and experience something special this summer?
Then a different kind of time travel to the 1800s might be for you.
You will live as a farming family in a smallholding in Krikkebjerghuse. Here you’ll learn about the life and times of smallholders, lots of fun and practical tasks and learn about the methods and materials used by smallholders.
You’ll look after livestock, gardens and fields, chop firewood, cook and try different craft activities.
A vacation in the 1800s is an unforgettable experience where you can explore the time from when great-great-great-grandpa was a boy, and a time travel filled with experiences and challenges suitable for the whole family.
