Are you on a bike?
The bike ride to Lejre Land of Legends is an experience in itself.
The majestic Ledreborg Allé is the longest in the country and a wonderful challenge for the legs. Two national cycle routes and the Maguerite Route run roughly past the main entrance to Lejre Land of Legends.
By bike from Lejre station
If you cycle from Lejre station, you’ll be in the Land of Legends before you know it. The trip is just 4 km, or just over 2 km if you take a shortcut through the forest.
Driving from the station along Lejrevej, you’ll pass some barren tree trunks sticking up out of a dark waterhole, which sets the fairytale tone. Then you turn onto Denmark’s longest avenue. Ox your way sweating up the hill, which at its steepest has a gradient of just under 8%. On the other hand, you can enjoy the rush down it on the way back. The old lime trees tower proudly on either side of you. The road winds through the forest past Ledreborg’s beautiful old buildings and along the golf course, eventually reaching Sagnlandet’s parking lot.
Here you will be welcomed to an adventurous day in the Land of Legends.

By bike from Roskilde station
The bike ride from Roskilde station takes about an hour at a leisurely pace.
Get out of Roskilde the right way!
Head west from the station along Jernbanegade, which becomes Borgerdiget. Turn left onto Helligkorsvej and continue to the roundabout. You are now on national cycle routes 4 and 6. From here you can follow the signs that guide you almost all the way to Sagnlandet Lejre.
The tour continues out of Roskilde and through Svogerslev. You’ll quickly pass through the small town that has almost grown together with Roskilde. On the other side of Svogerslev, you really get the feeling of being in the countryside. The road is high, so the hilly landscape opens up gratefully at your feet. If you arrive at the right time, you can enjoy the sight of the bright yellow rapeseed fields.
The cycle path leads you whizzing under Lindenborgvej and on through Kornerup. A sharp turn to the left on a steep climb will challenge your cycling skills. Catch your breath and fill your water bottle at the small village church. Water is always available in cemeteries and there’s usually also a toilet to borrow.
From Kornerup it’s an uphill ride towards Gl. Lejre. Shortly after, the road turns to gravel, but before you reach Gl. Lejre, you’ll pass the original stone ship, a full replica of which has been built in Sagnlandet. Further down the road is Lejre Museum. Here you can get all the information you could wish for about the ship settlement – in addition to the many other finds that have been made in the Lejre area.
From here it’s just a few hundred meters to Ledreborg Allé, where the last challenging climb awaits. Don’t forget to enjoy the beautiful lime trees, which in the summer envelop you in a green glow. Continue through the forest and along the golf course, and soon you’ll have to leave the national cycle route and turn right towards Sagnlandet Lejre. You’ll see a sign, so there’s no mistaking it. Give your bike a rest before embarking on your next adventure in Lejre Land of Legends.
If you’re brave enough to skip the signposted route at Lejre Museum, you can save a few kilometers and get nature for all your effort. Cross the highway and continue along the field road so that you continue more or less straight ahead. The field road continues deep into the countryside and at one point turns sharp left and heads into the forest. Follow the forest path and you will end up at the Sagnlandet parking lot.
