Research and experiments in Lejre Land of Legends
Archaeological finds are only fragments of what our ancestors surrounded themselves with. Much is only partially preserved or difficult to describe and explain.

At Lejre Land of Legends, we are not just an excursion destination, but a research center that constantly contributes new knowledge about the past. Research is the basis of Lejre Land of Legends and the foundation on which communication and education rests.
Experimental archaeology
Experimental archaeology is a scientific method that contributes new explanations and interpretations of archaeological finds by conducting experiments. Lejre Land of Legends operates with three different categories of experiments:

1) Experiments with ancient technology
In this type of experiment, objects or work processes are reconstructed and analyzed. This could, for example, be experiments on the manufacture and use of certain tools.

2) Experiments on ancient living conditions and intervention in nature
In this type of experiment, for example, studies are carried out on indoor climate and cultivation methods.

3) Experiments on archaeological methods and the creation of source material
This type of experiment could, for example, be about how and how quickly different materials decompose or change when they are in the ground.
Lejre Land of Legends research projects
Lejre Land of Legends is constantly conducting large and small experiments and research projects. For example, we are currently recreating Denmark’s largest royal hall from the Viking Age, which is part of the new area The World of the Legendary Kings. The project opens the door to new trials, experiments and research projects that can bring new knowledge about the Vikings to light.

What colors did the Vikings use? What clothes did they wear? How did they build a royal hall with a curved wooden structure? There are exciting research projects going on these days.

Research grants
At present, Lejre Land of Legends has no available research grant funds that can be applied for. We only use the funds we have at our disposal for our own projects within ceramics technology and textile technology, possibly in collaboration with external partners, which Lejre Land of Legends will then contact itself.
