The Iron Age sunset and the dawn of the Viking AgeIt was a time with large changes, where society went from mainly small villages with each its own chieftain, to gathering under kings and counts, and where power was both strong and weak. It was a time when bard played music and told stories in great mead halls, and where many of the myths and sagas we know from the Middle Ages have their roots. The end of the Iron Age is that time, where the foundations of what we call the Iron Age was laid. It was a time marked by a climate event of catastrophic proportions, so terrible, that we are today guessing it is the real life root of the Viking’s idea about Fimbullwinter, the beginning of Ragnarok and the end of the world. On top of that, it is a time where a large and prosperous warrior aristocracy begins to form. It is those warrior clans that Vikinge age society begins to grow from, and which are the background for the first time we see what looks like a royal power in the beginning of the Viking Age in what we call Denmark today. |
Fascinating finds tell a true storyOn a beautiful hill, the Land of Legends has remade the largest King’s Hall that we know of from the Viking Age in Denmark. The original archaeological finds that the King’s Hall build on are to be found less than 3 kilometers from the Land of Legends, on a field in the village of Gl. Lejre. Here, archaeologists have been busy excavating the traces of an impressive building, which spreads through the Iron Age and into the Viking Age. In 2009, traces of the largest viking habitation in Denmark peaked out from the mud. With a little more than 60 meters from one end to the other, it’s about as long as a football field is wide, and with its rows of big, large posts, the construction has been able to support a building with up to 10 meters o the ceiling. With over 600 m2, the large King’s Hall is a unique witness of the culmination of Nordic architecture and crafts of the Viking Age. The looming King’s Hall and the many other impressive finds from the Iron and Viking Age seem to show that Gl. Lejre had a speciel position in its contemporary time. Maybe it even held the headquarters of society’s leadership in a time, where Denmark moved between Viking Age and Kingship. Lejre’s importance has left a decisive mark in the sagas, legends and other written sources. Lejre is often associated with the mythical royal family of the Scyldings, which according to myths and legends, includes the kings Skjöldr, Hrothgar, Helge, Hrólfr Kraki, Ragnar Lodbrok and Harold Hiltertooth. And, even though these stories seem to exist only in myths, the conclusive archaeological evidence proves that Lejre had an important place in Danish history in the Iron Age and the Viking Age. The King’s Hall is a part of the reconstructed Viking area in the Land of Legends. Our Viking Age area is filled with fascinating activities and experiences for the entire family. We look forward to welcoming you into yet another travel through time – back to the dawn of the Viking Age! |
